Blend in with the locals
Stavanger guide for visitors
A rough guide for blending in with the locals in Stavanger - European Capital of Culture 2008.

Blend in with the locals in Stavanger

Don’t mind the temperature

It doesn’t matter if you can’t feel your toes. If the sun is out, so are you!

One topic that never gets old, regardless of the weather is how much you are looking forward to summer.

Pretend it’s nothing

Don’t be frightened if you’re surprised at night by a rusty naked gentleman when walking around town. The statues are a part of the Anthony Gormley art project Broken Column, and you’ll find the everywhere including stores, homes and parking garages.

The weather dictates everything

We refuse to admit that the weather dictates everything. When it starts raining just pretend that it isn’t happening. Sporting an umbrella is admitting defeat.

Get on the inside – outside

The place in Stavanger to drink a beer outdoors is Hansen Hjørnet (Hansen Corner).

If you don’t find Hansen Hjørnet without directions, you’re not in Stavanger.

Leave your tux at home

If you are out for the evening a pair of jeans and a casual shirt will do just fine.

Wear a suit and a tie and you’ll risk spending your night talking about real estate.

Learn to love coffee

Cafes and restaurants are a favourite topic of conversation. If you get roped into a discussion, just say, “I know, but what about their coffee?”

Where to rendezvous

Everybody meets outside Kulturhuset (The Culture House). Nobody knows why.

Use your legs

The city centre is easily got around on foot, and most of it is pedestrians-only. Walking will save you hours of looking for a parking spot.

Love seafood

If you don’t, keep it to yourself.

Go with the flow

Bar and club opening hours are complicated and keep on looking for people who point towards the ceiling.

It usually means that he place upstairs is still open, or it could be somebody talking about the weather.
